Into the forest

FORAGING NATURE

Humans have been foraging for thousands of years. Although we are no longer nomadic communities relying on hunting and gathering as our primary food source it remains a part of life for so many of us. What we find out in nature is not something you can put on your weekly grocery list as these items cannot be bought at just any grocery store. They can be purchased online and in specialty stores but remeber, they are still harvested in the wild, so -

Why not get out there and get it yourself? I am no expert and will never claim to be, but I am happy to share what we do know and love with you. Share in our adventures through our social media outlets and tap in to my favorite recipes in our kitchen pages.

MUSHROOMS

In our area there is a large community of mushroom hunters. With the wide range of crown land and yearly forest fires, morels are usually the most popular.

We also have a respectable amount of shaggy manes, puff balls, oyster and coral mushrooms. And lets not forget, the ever coveted chaga. With each there is a season and with so many options available the mushroom hunting can span the whole year.

MOUNTAIN BERRIES

Huckleberries, thimble berries, saskatoons, rowan berries....the list goes on. Anyone who has the pleasure of eating wild raspberries knows the domestic variety just can't compete! Wild fruit is provides a richness in color and flavor resulting in the best preserves.

VEGGIES, HERBS & MEDICINAL PLANTS

Playing in the dirt to cultivate home grown vegetables is truly one of my favorite things and so rewarding. Foraging for those I cannot grow at home is a close second. Nature provides a variety of food that can so easily go unnoticed if you don't know what you're looking at. Join us on our youtube channel, Up the Spruce, as we forage the East Kootenays.
